Cutting Edge Contemporary in Latin America
Latin America has emerged as one of the most fascinating sites of artistic production in the past twenty years. Artists in this region range widely across painting, sculpture, photography, and film to make work that is highly poetic and invested in materials, but also attuned to the spe- cific nature of place: Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and so on. This lecture will look at a number of exciting artistic practices from this region, one that is deeply connected to our own sense of place here in California. $30

Art & Politics in the 21st Century
Is there a relationship between art and politics? If so, what does it look like? How might art matter to politics? Questions such as these have increasingly occupied artists in recent years, and some of the most thought-provoking contemporary art addresses these questions with a combination of poignant personal investment and broad global reach. This talk examines the work of several global contemporary artists who have taken up the question of art's relation- ship to politics with sensitivity and pathos. $30

Performance Art In & Out of the Museum
Performance Art is a genre born in the 1970s, but has become especially relevant in recent years as new media formats such as YouTube allow the Internet to be every performer's stage. This talk considers a few recent performances that have captivated contemporary art audi- ences, and forced us to question what the role of the artist is in society. Whether you enjoy theater or are simply aware of what it means to be a body moving in the world, this talk will offer food for thought about the ways we engage our surroundings. $30

Pop After Warhol
In the 1960s Andy Warhol famously fused high art and pop culture with his silkscreened can- vases of icons ranging from Marilyn Monroe to Campbell's soup cans. Since this time, artists have continued to mine the rich terrain of popular culture, appropriating everything from pop music to Hollywood movies to make works of art. In this talk, we will consider some of the most compelling approaches to incorporating the stuff of our everyday pop lives into art.
